AGNÈS JAOUI’S LATEST social comedy finds the veteran writer-director also in a supporting role, as a ditzy day-care worker whose classroom fairytale enactments set the tone for colour-soaked, fable-like events that enfold her wealthy niece and a poor young composer who, shall we say, loses his slipper at the ball. Jean-Pierre Bacri, the filmmaker’s partner (in writing and life), plays the composer’s grumpy driving instructor dad, and French pop singer Benjamin Biolay is appropriately saturnine as music impresario called Max Wolf! It’s one of the fest’s surest pleasures.

   "Ce concert a tout d’une rencontre insolite et rare : celle de quatre artistes dont la renommée mondiale n’est plus à faire, de quatre femmes de cultures et de milieux différents (musique et cinéma, lyrique et variété, classique et traditionnel), de quatre musiciennes en marge de leur chemin habituel. Par delà son aspect baroque, cette heureuse mixité invente sa propre règle des trois unités : la polyvalence, tout d’abord, de quatre électrons libres qui n’en ont jamais fini de surprendre et abordent la scène par tous les côtés. What was the starting point for “Under The Rainbow”?

Jean-Pierre Bacri: We started from the classic fairytale ending: “And they all lived happily ever after, and had lots of children.” Living happily and having lots of children seemed a bit hasty to us: there’s a whole life to be led. And in reality, once you’ve met your Prince or Princess Charming, what happens then? What happens once the book is closed? We wanted a sort of variation on the couple as it is, or as it becomes, and on love in general.

 Agnès Jaoui: Jean-Pierre and I always work the same way: we take a theme and we delve into it. We wanted to explore the question of belief, starting from the fairytale....To read all the interview click here
