 "Ils se sont mis à deux pour écrire le scénario. L’objectif valait bien une telle complicité. « Au bout du conte » c’est une écriture magnifique, si naturelle que l’on n’imagine ni le poids des mots, ni leur signification. Ils s’entendent comme une petite musique de cinéma, qui ne s’arrêterait jamais. Les dialogues, les situations, même les plus insolites, coulent de source, fluides, dans ce récit qui entre légende et réalité, se faufile au gré des humeurs. Au lecteur-spectateur de se frayer un passage, et dieu sait que les chemins ne manquent pas dans ce foisonnement d’idées et de bonheur conjugués. Children in French films are usually light-years from Hollywood cuteness, and this film’s 9-year-old protagonist, Rachel (Juliette Gombert), is no exception. She lives with her loving but overprotective mother (Agnès Jaoui, not afraid to look haggard) and Holocaust-survivor father (Comédie Française vet Denis Podalydès), a renovator of kitchens who has let his own family’s home decay in 1980s provincial France.
