Cela fait 20 ans qu’elle n’avait plus joué sur les scènes du théâtre. 20 ans c’est long mais ce n’est pas pour autant que le public l’a perdue de vue, bien au contraire. Pendant ces 20 ans, elle s’est imposée au cinéma comme scénariste, actrice, réalisatrice, elle a osé la chanson, s’est produite en concert. Son parcours est celui d’une artiste pour qui les mots ont du poids et frappent d’autant plus s’ils sont servis avec un zeste d’ironie et un soupçon de second degré, un art qu’elle maîtrise à la perfection.
En la voyant sur les planches du Théâtre de la Madeleine, dans Les uns sur les autres, étonnante pièce de la jeune Léonore Confino, on se dit que cette comédienne a manqué au théâtre français et que durant ces vingt ans écoulés, on aurait bien aimé la voir arpenter certains de nos auteurs classiques. Mais tout n’est pas perdu !
Nous recevons ce soir Agnès Jaoui pour parler avec elle de théâtre, de cinéma, d’engagement, et, plus largement, de ce qu’est la vie d’une femme qui a choisi de choisir et non pas de subir. PARIS, 24 jan 2014 (AFP) - Vingt ans après la pièce "Un air de famille", Agnès Jaoui revient à ses premières amours, le théâtre, dans une pièce jubilatoire au Théâtre de la Madeleine, "Les uns sur les autres"....
...Le tout ne manque ni de rythme, ni de profondeur. On rit d'autant mieux qu'on se reconnaît dans certaines réparties de cette chronique familiale, comme lorsque la mère prêche à ses rejetons "les fondamentaux: Gandhi, Bouddha, tout ça!". Sans parler de la psychologie à la petite semaine: "l'ostéopathe et l'acupuncteur sont formels: le mal de dos, c'est le passé!" Bref, la famille, on l'aime, surtout quand c'est Agnès Jaoui qui la fait tenir debout...To read all the review click here

Indiewire reports that Cherchez Hortense with Jean-Pierre Bacri & Kristin Scott-Thomas has been selected for the 14th Edition of Film Comment Selects in New York (Feb. 17 -27):
"The Film Society of Lincoln Center announced today the 22 films -- both old and new -- that will be screened as part of Film Comment magazine's Film Comment Selects festival on Feb. 17-27. Seventeen of the films will be premiering in New York for the first time. This year also marks the 14th year that the festival has taken place".
CHERCHEZ HORTENSE (2012) 100 min Director: Pascal Bonitzer, Country: France Jean-Pierre Bacri and Kristin Scott Thomas together at last—enough said? Another of the pleasing, underrated comedy-dramas of frequent Rivette and Ruiz screenplay collaborator and ex–Cahiers du cinéma critic Pascal Bonitzer. Bacri is a conflicted and ineffectual academic who reluctantly agrees to ask his father, a senior judge, to pull some strings on behalf of a Polish woman facing deportation—a task that fills him with horror since his relationship with his father is, you know,complicated. His marriage to a celebrated stage director (Scott Thomas) is on the skids, his teenage son is going through growing pains, a cranky old friend (Jackie Berroyer) is suicidal, and amidst all this he’s befriended by Aurore (Isabelle Carré), a girl half his age. Full of delightful moments and wry observations, this is an old-school relationship movie in which a self-involved member of the Parisian cultural elite comes to see how the other half lives, and it’s more than carried by Bacri, one of the best actors in contemporary French cinema. Quand on a rendez-vous avec Agnès Jaoui, Jean-Pierre Bacri n’est jamais très loin. L’actrice, scénariste et réalisatrice de 49 ans a beau revenir au théâtre sans son éternel complice, on le croise tout sourire dans les coulisses du Théâtre de la Madeleine.
Dans « les Uns sur les autres », écrit par la jeune Léonore Confino et mis en scène par Catherine Schaub, Agnès Jaoui incarne une mère de famille débordée, dont le quotidien va imploser à la suite de la révélation d’un secret. La dernière fois qu’on vous a vue au théâtre, c’était il y a vingt ans, dans « Un air de famille ». Pourquoi avoir attendu aussi longtemps?
AGNÈS JAOUI. A chaque fois qu’on écrit avec Jean-Pierre Bacri, on se dit que ce sera pour le théâtre, parce que c’est nos premières amours, et que j’aime ça par-dessus tout, mais finalement on fait des films! Et je n’ai reçu aucune proposition qui m’emballait. Je suis remontée sur scène grâce à la musique, ce qui a comblé le manque. Et puis est arrivée cette pièce à laquelle je n’ai pas pu dire non.... L'art de la fugue by Brice Cauvin with Agnes Jaoui, Benjamin Biolay will be released in June 2014
Finally there's a release date for L'art de la fugue directed by Brice Cauvin, starring Agnes Jaoui, Laurent Lafitte, Guy Marchand, Benjamin Biolay, that's been shot it more than two years ago. According to Zelig Film Distribution site the movie will be released in June 2014.
Co-written by Cauvin and Raphaëlle Desplechin (with Jaoui acting as consultant), the script centres on Antoine (Lafitte): his job as a tour operator, his partner with whom he is planning to buy a house, his colleague and friend Ariel (Jaoui), his brothers the neurotic Gérard and engaged-to-be-married Louis, his father with a heart condition and his cantankerous mother… Everything is going well, but nothing is right: he doesn’t want the house, Gérard can’t get over his ex-wife, Louis is cheating on his wife-to-be… And Ariel sweeps through this little world like a hurricane. Adept at the "art of finding a way out", Antoine will have to make a decision…

I'm going to take an educated guess that you've already read Part 1 of this take on eight creative partnerships in French cinema and you're here to read about the remaining four couples, so what are we waiting for:
Agnes Jaoui and Jean-Pierre Bacri met in 1987 whilst rehearsing Harold Pinter’s L’Anniversaire (The Birthday Party) and both realised more or less at once that they were compatible both creatively and personally. They formed a relationship - some sources indicate that they did in fact marry - that endures to this day (although again there have been recent rumours of a split) and has so far produced two stage playsand eight screenplays (including film adaptations of the stage plays). Initially they were content merely to write a play/screenplay together and then appear in leading roles, but eventually Jaoui assumed a third role, that of director, making their partnership the only one of the eight classified as Directress-Actor rather than Director-Actress....To read all the analysis click here

INTERVIEW - Agnès Jaoui de retour au théâtre
Depuis Un Air de famille en 1994, la comédienne avait délaissé le théâtre. Agnès Jaoui est enfin de retour dans Les Uns sur les autres de Léonore Confino, une auteure des plus prometteuses de la nouvelle génération. Propos recueillis par M-C Nivière.
Pourquoi revenir au théâtre avec ce texte plutôt qu’un autre ?
Parce que je ne pouvais pas dire non ! Je réagis toujours comme ça. La singularité du texte, la force de l’écriture, le rôle de la mère que l’on me proposait mais aussi tous les personnages m’ont séduite. Léonore est une grande auteure et je suis très heureuse de la jouer. Elle a un style. Ce n’est pas du naturalisme et pourtant c’est évident. La juxtaposition des mots provoque soit le rire soit les larmes. C’est beau, c’est remarquable. To read all the interview click here
